Eleven candidates are seeking one open Grand Rapids city commissioner seat.

The candidates include Grand Rapids Urban League CEO Joseph Jones, retired police detective Terrence McGee and Seyferth PR Vice President Michael Zalewski.

Several may be familiar to voters, including previous mayoral candidate John George, William Mohr of the U.S. Taxpayers Party and James Rinck, a former public school board member and Kent County Democratic Party chairman. Rinck also ran for Grand Rapids mayor in 2007.

Stephanie Mull, Jared Secor, Tamara VandenBerg, Robert VanRavenswaay and Louis Wagner also filed applications with the city clerk's office.

City commissioners will interview all 11 candidates at its upcoming meeting next Tuesday.

The top three choices will be announced on January 27.

A public town hall, public hearing and second round of interviews will follow, with a formal vote appointing a new commissioner to be held on February 23.

The second ward seat became vacant following the election of current Mayor Rosalynn Bliss.
