Michigan Department of Corrections selects new motto

The Michigan Department of Corrections has a new motto.

The motto "Committed to Protect, Dedicated to Success" was announced in a department newsletter posted online Friday.

It was chosen after a department-wide vote and is part of an effort to reflect its mission of prisoner rehabilitation as well as public safety. Corrections workers submitted about 550 suggestions for the new slogan and those were earlier whittled down to 10 finalists.

The department says the winning motto was submitted by Macomb County probation agent April Griffin and received 20 percent of the total vote. More than 3,200 votes were submitted.

The department has said that some corrections officers didn't like the old motto, "help make things right," because it sounded like the workers were a part of what was wrong.
