Could 2016 be the year of marijuana in Michigan politics?

2016 could bring big changes to the way Michigan treats marijuana.

State lawmakers are considering legislation to overhaul the state’s medical marijuana system. Supporters want to create legal protections and strict regulations for dispensaries. The legislation is stalled in committee after heavy opposition from caregivers and patient groups – who worry the regulations would drive up costs.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Rick Jones says he’s still hopeful the bills will pass.

“I think if it gets on the Senate floor, the prospects are good that it’ll pass.”

There are also three Michigan groups collecting signatures to put marijuana legalization on the November ballot.
