Michigan makes $450K available to help fund recycling carts

The state of Michigan says $450,000 is being made available to communities to help purchase residential recycling carts.

The Department of Environmental Quality says funding may be sought by cities, villages, townships, counties, tribal governments and municipal solid waste or resource recovery authorities that are interested in expanding local recycling programs.

The funding is part of Gov. Rick Snyder's initiative announced in 2014 to double the state's residential recycling rate.

The state says switching to recycling carts, as opposed to smaller bins, generally increases recycling rates in communities.

Requests for funding will be accepted through March 31.
