Prosecutor: Police justified in fatal shooting at apartments

KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) - A prosecutor says a police officer was justified in fatally shooting a man who shot at him at a western Michigan apartment building.

In a statement released Thursday, Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth says it appears that 47-year-old Timothy Arnold intended to die.

The Kentwood Police Department says two officers responded about 11 p.m. Oct. 21 to a report of a possible suicidal man at Sutton Club Apartments, near Grand Rapids. Police say Arnold fired a shot at one of the officers after leaving an apartment.

WOOD-TV reports Arnold was about 3 feet away from the officer when he fired a shot. The officer returned fire, hitting Arnold with three rounds.

Forsyth says the officer had "no escape route and no place to take cover."
