The western Michigan village of Shelby is under a boil water emergency after coliform was detected in the water supply.
The Muskegon Chronicle reports anyone on the Oceana County village's water distribution system should boil water before use.
An advisory says bottled or boiled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.
Bacteria were found in the water system during routine testing.
Coliform is found in plants and soil as well as in human and animal feces.
While coliform itself typically doesn't cause illness, it can indicate the presence of disease-causing organisms.
The village is working with state officials to resolve the problem.
