Ann Arbor officials approve winter deer cull

non-licensed

Ann Arbor officials have decided to allow sharpshooters to cull deer on public land this winter.

The Ann Arbor City Council on Thursday night voted in favor of spending up to $35,000 to hire sharpshooters to lure and kill 100 deer at night in city-owned parks and natural areas. In order for the cull to take place, the council also voted to change a city law to allow the discharge of weapons in public places.

Dozens of opponents attended the meeting and argued that the cull is dangerous to the public and isn't a necessary way to address problems with the deer population.

One supporter said the deer population is getting out of control and the cull shouldn't be limited to 100 deer.
