Man sentenced for embezzling from family-owned business

An ex-CFO who pleaded guilty to taking roughly $300,000 from a western Michigan manufacturer has been sentenced to five to 20 years in prison.

The Grand Rapids Press reports

Kent County Circuit Judge Mark Trusock issued the longest possible sentence Thursday to Chad Perleberg. He pleaded guilty last month to embezzling from Wyoming-based Grand Rapids Foam Technologies, which makes products for furniture, bedding and seating.

Authorities say Perleberg used company checks to pay for personal credit cards, issued checks to himself, altered petty cash receipts and used a company credit card for his expenses. Court records say an audit found nearly $330,000 had been misappropriated.

Police say the thefts occurred between April 2011 and last October.

Perleberg says he's "a family man" who attends church and serves the community.
