Snyder designates week for welcoming immigrants

Rick Snyder has designated a week intended for welcoming immigrants in Michigan.

Snyder said in a release the period that started Saturday and runs through Sept. 20 is intended to recognize immigrants "who contribute economically and culturally to making our state a better place."

Among the Welcoming Week in Michigan activities is a daylong event scheduled for Wednesday at Macomb Community College.

Officials say the Welcoming Michigan Statewide Convening event in Warren is designed to share efforts on creating welcoming communities as well as ideas for integrating immigrants.

Snyder last year created the Michigan Office for New Americans to keep and attract immigrants and promote their "entrepreneurial spirit."
