Authorities: Explosion during target practice injuries man

Authorities say a man's leg was nearly severed during target practice after a metal barrel containing explosives sent jagged pieces flying in western Michigan.

The Ludington Daily News and The Muskegon Chronicle report the sheriff's department responded Sunday afternoon following the explosion on private property in Mason County's Grant Township.

The department says a group of men was shooting at the barrel when it exploded and a piece struck a 49-year-old man who was more than 150 feet away.

He was seated behind a tree, but had his leg exposed.

His injuries were described as serious.
