Appeals court: MSU must release names of student-athletes who might be suspects

The state Court of Appeals says Michigan State University must release the names of student-athletes who may be suspects in criminal cases.

MSU is fighting a Freedom of Information request filed by the ESPN sports network for a story on which schools are most lenient with student athletes accused of crimes. There was no argument over MSU redacting the names of victims and witnesses from campus incident reports. But MSU also wants to shield the names of suspects until they are actually charged with a crime. ESPN said who is and is not charged is part of the story. MSU has not decided whether to appeal the decision to the Michigan Supreme Court.
