A township ordinance does allow trustees to approve a gun range on private property if safety and operational specifications are met

“A gun range, you have to be so focused on safety.”

And Georgetown Township trustee Amy Grassman says she is not convinced the family in a nearby home or children in a Hudsonville school would be safe if a property owner builds a private gun range by 36th Avenue and Bauer Road.

“What concerns me is there is a school nearby and a house nearby with five children. I believe a bullet already went through their garage and the six year old boy picked it up and asked what is this?”

In his permit application Tim Doane said he would shoot small caliber handguns and rifles into a dirt berm at his private range. Trustee Grassman had questions, but the applicant was not at the meeting.

“I wanted to ask how far does he plan on shooting. You know a pistol range you generally shoot from 7 to 15 yards. A rifle range from 100, 200, 300 yards. But he is not here.”

“There has been a motion to deny this request, all in favor say aye. Aye. Opposed? Request is denied.”
