A state government building was renamed Wednesday to honor retired U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow.

The new Deborah A. Stabenow building is located near the state Capitol, where she represented the Lansing region in the Legislature from 1979 to 1994. She went on to serve in the U.S. House and Senate until she retired in January of this year.

Stabenow said public service is often under attack right now, but it is important for people to stay engaged:

“We can’t each take a gallon of the Great Lakes and protect it and say somehow we’ve been able to protect the Great Lakes. You have to do it together through this thing called government, which is public service, which is important.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced in her State of the State address in February that a state office building would be renamed for Stabenow.
