College students "dip for a scholarship" at West Michigan university

Grace Christian University

Students at Grace Christian University jumped into icy water Wednesday in a fundraiser for college tuition

“1-2-3!”

“It's freezing when you get in the water but its only for three seconds so its bearable.”

Triston Murray is a senior at Grace Christian University in Wyoming and one of the 21 brave souls to fully immerse in a pool of icy water in the Big Freeze event -- a fundraiser to help students lower their tuition bills.

“After four years you accumulate a little student debt, and you got some to pay off. I’m also getting married this summer.”

The university matches a certain amount and gives scholarships based on the money raised, awarding a total of $21,475 this year.

Emily Lazor is the Advancement Coordinator and helped organize the event with the Student Affairs department.

“These students have gone all in… literally. They also are investing in themselves.”

Junior Stacy Delgado says every little bit helps.

“I’m working two jobs to pay off my tuition during school so having his opportunity is a huge blessing to me.”

Tuition at Christian universities in Michigan varies by school and program and can include fees plus room and board.

Grace Christian University’s tuition for fall 2025 is $19,500.

So is saving money worth the Big Freeze?

“It was really cold but it was so fun!”
