Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed October 2024 as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services [or DIFS] is encouraging consumers and businesses to protect their personal and financial information from scammers and cyberattacks

While some cybersecurity breaches are the work of sophisticated hackers and foreign agents targeting older adults or people who are less tech-savvy, state officials say most successful cyberattacks occur because of a failure to follow well-established cybersecurity practices.

In a news release, the Director of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services or DIFS, Anita Fox says, “All across the country data breaches are increasing and cybercriminals are becoming more aggressive and creative” she adds, "DIFS is committed to helping Michiganders learn how protect their personal data and avoid falling victim to scams and cyberattacks."

The DIFS offers some tips and steps consumers can take to protect themselves, including not accessing personal or financial info like bank accounts on public Wi-Fi. Password protect all user accounts and devices that connect to the internet and don’t use the same password twice. They also advise looking out for phishing emails.
