The celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continues this week with an event through the Hauenstein Center at Grand Valley State University

TaRita Johnson has spent most of her career focused on recruiting diverse talent for universities and companies across the country, and creating life skills programming. She’ll weave together her life experiences with the legacy of Dr. King at a commemoration Thursday.

“Celebrating the legacy, and then continuing it.”

In her current position as Senior Vice President of Talent and Diversity at The Right Place, Johnson meets with a lot of community and business leaders in west Michigan. She’s encouraged by what she sees as an authentic desire to create change, but the challenge is finding a concrete way to do it.

”You can have the intent. You can have the heart, but how do we get to execution?

She says people have been reactive to events in recent years and its good to have those conversations, but it’s also important to be proactive - to work for change in whatever sphere of influence an individual has.

“We can use our voice, or our activism, the work we do, the community engagement we have to really empower others to make social impact and a positive change.”

TaRita Johnson will speak at the Reverand Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Thursday at 5 pm at the Loosemore Auditorium of the Devos Center on Grand Valley’s campus in downtown Grand Rapids.
