Tax season can get expensive. According to the National Society of Accountants, in 2021 some individuals paid as much as $700 in tax assistance services. Students at Davenport University want to help break down these financial barriers.

Davenport University is working with the West Michigan VITA Collegiate Partnership and the IRS-sponsored VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) to host eight tax help centers this year.

The program is open to individuals and families earning $60,000 or less annually. The University says it also focuses on assisting senior residents and people with disabilities, with the goal of keeping money in people’s pockets.

All Davenport students, faculty and community volunteers manning the centers are IRS-certified.

“This program is a win-win,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, president of Davenport University. “It’s an opportunity for our students to provide a valuable community service, and help our West Michigan neighbors earn their much-needed tax refunds and credits, while also learning valuable skills that align with their career goals.”

Last year the program provided tax assistance to almost 4,000 individuals in West Michigan. Since 2010, Davenport says $85 million in refunds have been filed.
