Bills aimed at increasing government transparency is heading to the full Michigan House of Representatives

The bills would amend the Freedom of Information Act, or “FOIA,” to require notice of receiving a request within two business days and explanations for why one is denied.

Jen is with the Michigan Municipal League. She says she worries the bills would overburden local FOIA coordinators.

“Being the FOIA coordinator is not their main job so dropping everything to respond to a FOIA request when it is brought in is not realistic in most places.”

But Republican House Oversight Committee Chair Steve Johnson says the bills reflect many concerns.

“It is our intention to try to make FOIA as easily accessible to everyday Michiganders so that way government is open and transparent.”
