With around 66% of the population fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and new cases on a general downward trend since the start of the year, WalletHub recently released its updated rankings for the "Safest States During COVID-19". In their rankings, the study ranked Michigan as the 10th least safe state during COVID-19.

In order to find out the safest states during the COVID-19 pandemic, Personal finance website WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across five key metrics. Jill Gonzalez is a WalletHub Analyst, she says they update their findings every two weeks.

“So, Michigan, it just cracks the bottom ten in terms of safety here. Obviously, not a ranking that you want to be in the bottom ten. And this looks at five key metrics, COVID 19 transmission rates, positive test cases, hospitalizations and deaths as well as the share of the eligible population getting vaccinated.”

Gonzalez says they look at the metrics as kind of a snowball effect in terms of which metrics affect the others.

“So, the vaccination rate could be higher especially compared to other states, So right now, the vaccination rate ranks 38th the death rate about 32nd, so those two things are pretty closely linked in most states and that’s exactly what we’re seeing in Michigan too. Other things like positive test cases and hospitalizations also trend higher.”

Gonzalez says you can find the complete survey including rankings for other states in their education section at Wallethub.com
