If you have unwanted prescription drugs in your home there’s a safe way to get rid of them. The Kentwood Police Department is hosting its annual “Take Drugs Back Day”.

The Kentwood Police Department along with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will host the 22nd “Take Back Drugs Day” on Saturday, April 30. It will run from 10 am until 2 pm at the Kentwood Police Department. Here’s Captain Ryan Vanderveen.

“We’ve been doing this for many years, partnering with the DEA. It’s just a good way for the public to get rid of unused and unwanted prescription drugs. We can keep them out of circulation, out of people’s homes and dispose of them in a safe way.”

Vanderveen says residents can simply drop off their unwanted medications.

“They can bring pills, tablets and gelcaps but not any needles or liquid medication.”

Last fall, DEA and law enforcement agencies collected 745 tons of expired, unwanted, and unused prescription medications from the public nationwide as part of DEA’s ongoing commitment to turn the tide against the U.S. opioid epidemic. Following the 21st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the program has removed more than 15.2 million pounds of medication from circulation since its inception.

Vanderveen says the service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.
