A new coalition is launching a campaign to address community safety.

LINC UP, Urban Core Collective, NAACP of Greater Grand Rapids, and the ACLU of Michigan formed the “Community Owns Safety” coalition.

The coalition seeks to redefine Public Safety in Grand Rapids.

“The core essence of it is to really have the community set the expectations and priorities of how the city should invest its money.”

That’s Vincent Thurman, Linc Up’s Director of Communications. He says the “Community Owns Safety” coalition was established during a lot of the unrest that occurred in 2020. It was formed to take a proactive step toward creating thriving communities. And expanding the definition of public safety in Grand Rapids beyond policing.

“And that’s a broad spectrum, not just policing. But it’s regarding how the city invests in housing, parks and green spaces and the environment and activities and amenities. Or how funding is distributed across the wards. What we’re hoping to do with this campaign, specifically the “Public Safety Is” campaign, is really have the community set the stage for what leads to thriving communities.”

Thurman says they’re working through the “Public Safety Is” campaign which has been launched by the coalition

“This would be a space for the community to amplify their voice and then make those priorities known to decision makers and then to influence those decision makers to speak on behalf of the will of the people.”

Thurman says more can be learned about the campaign on their website at communityownssafety.org as well as their Facebook and Instagram pages under the same name.
