After COVID delayed its 10th anniversary celebration, “Rock the Block” is back this year and may be bigger than before as it will span three locations. This year it’s called, “Rock the Park”. It’s being held on Saturday.
“The last year we know has been hard for people, and so, we want to make sure we can bring people together to have some fun, and get reconnected, but do so safely.”
That’s Vincent Thurman, Director of Communications for Linc Up. He says last year Rock the Block would have celebrated ten years-but COVID forced the cancellation of the event that annually hosts about 8 to 10-thousand neighbors from across Grand Rapids, hundreds of community vendors, small businesses, and entertainers in one location. This year, it’s 11th year, he says they decided to “Rock the Park”, so instead of one location, they now will have three.
“I think one of the advantages of having it across three locations is that we can directly go to where the people are instead of them coming to us. So often we expect community members to come to us as community organizations and this is a really interesting opportunity to go right to source, directly to the people and I’m excited about that the most.”
Rock the Park will be held Saturday at Linc UP’s neighborhoods of focus, including Roosevelt, Garfield parks along with the Gerald R. Ford Academic Center. It runs from 11 to 3 pm and Thurman says it will be like an old-fashioned block party with lots of useful information.
“What we did is make sure we spread vendors across the 3 locations so that there’s either healthcare resources, small business vendors who haven’t been able to speak to people in the last couple months. And then we have so much for family and family fun, lawn games, music.”
Thurman says it’s suggested attendees where masks adding they will have masks and sanitizers on hand. You can go to their LINC UP Facebook page or their website at Lincup.org for more information on Rock the Park.
