Senate approves veto-proof initiative to repeal emergency powers law

The Republican-controlled state Senate has approved a petition initiative to rein in the authority Governor Gretchen Whitmer used to manage the early months of the COVID-19 crisis.

The petition initiative would repeal the law Whitmer used to issue COVID-19 emergency orders.

Republicans in the Legislature – such as Senator Tom Barrett – say the governor ignored them.

Barrett “Last year obviously presented quite a few different challenges, one of which was the unilateral seizure of power by one person in this state government.”

Geiss “Because apparently using the law to save lives is trampling upon rights now.”

Democratic Senator Erika Geiss says the initiative is just partisan politics at work.

The initiative now heads to the state House. It cannot be vetoed by the governor.
