Senate Dems plan attempt to undo controversial lame duck legislation

Senate democrats want to make changes to controversial legislation that came out of last year’s lame duck session.

The new law – signed by former governor Rick Snyder just before he left office – would add restrictions to people trying to get a measure on the ballot.

The law adds a couple new requirements like a 100-word factual statement and requiring signature collectors indicate whether they are paid or a volunteer.

But Democrats in the Senate plan to introduce changes to the law this week. A big concern is the provision that puts a cap on how many signatures can be collected from an individual Congressional district. They say it prevents people from putting measures on the ballot.

Senator Jim Ananich is the leader of the Democrats in the Senate.

“Fixing the ballot access is more of something they did in lame duck that has to be fixed”

Supporters of the law this isn’t a high bar. They say the signature requirement adds geographic diversity to the process.
