State lawmakers and community leaders gathered in Detroit Monday to advocate for legislation to make water bills more affordable across the state.

Detroit already has a water affordability program. Most low-income Detroiters who are enrolled pay as little as $18 a month for water through the program.

Detroit Water and Sewerage Director Gary Brown says a statewide program would help fund Detroit’s affordability program. He says all local municipalities should take part in it.

"We're not going to run from problems. We're going to run to them and we're going to solve this problem."

Opponents have said counties should be able to opt out of a statewide program.
