Temperatures are expected to hover in the teens and single digits in some locations for the next couple of days, with wind chills dipping into the negative zone. AAA says extremely cold temperatures can wreak havoc on vehicle functionality. The agency is offering some tips to help motorists keep their vehicles road-ready.
AAA’s Artic Air Advisory advises having batteries tested and fully charged and in good condition. Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up. Use a winter solvent windshield washer fluid that won’t freeze. Use an engine coolant that provides anti-freeze protection down to the lowest temperatures you may encounter and prevent freezing of your car doors by placing a plastic trash bag between the door or window glass and the frame.
AAA says during single-digit cold snaps, calls for dead batteries and other service-related needs across the Michigan are expected to jump. With this in mind, AAA also recommends you always travel with a cell phone and car charger and if you become stranded, they say it’s best to stay with your car. If the engine can be started, run it only long enough to keep warm.
