This will be the first State of the State address delivered by a Democratic governor to a Democratic Legislature in 40 years

Governor Gretchen Whitmer will deliver her State of the State address on Wednesday, January 25th. This will be the first State of the State delivered in person at the Capitol in three years and the first delivered by a Democratic governor to a Democratic Legislature in 40 years.

Bobby Leddy is the governor’s communications director. He says the election shows voters want to see action on measures that stalled in the last term.

“It was the reason that they re-elected the governor to lead the state for the next four year and gave her a Democratic majority to help get some of those proposals done.”

That includes formally repealing Michigan’s dormant abortion ban that remains on the books despite a constitutional amendment nullifying it. Also, increasing the earned income tax credit for working poor families. But the governor will also have to take into account that the Democrats’ legislative majorities are razor thin.
