A final push is underway to get the state Legislature to expand a tax break for working poor people before the end of the year.

Chances to expand the earned income credit appear to be dwindling.

Kent County Treasurer Peter MacGregor is a former Republican legislator. He says wide bipartisan support to expand the credit has been thwarted time and time again by political gamesmanship. But he says this is the best time in a long time to use federal dollars and a revenue windfall to help working poor families.

“The election is over yet we’re still playing those games of who’s going to get the win.”

MacGregor and other advocates say waiting on expanding the credit would mean families that could use the money now would have to wait until at least the 2024 tax season.
