Nearly ten months after coming together, the “Michigan Task Force on Juvenile Justice Reform” is close to giving its final recommendations

The task force, made up of lawmakers, judges, law enforcement and advocates, has been meeting since September to work out ways Michigan can improve its juvenile justice system.

The group plans to release its full report this Friday.

At a meeting last spring, it heard a presentation on key findings of a study from the “Council of State Governments.”

Research found Michigan lacks the framework to keep kids with a low risk of re-offending out of the justice system and that the state over-relies on the system for helping youth who commit low-level offenses.

The task force is meeting today to reach a consensus on how to respond.
