Governor Gretchen Whitmer will deliver the official Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
The decision was announced by the Democratic congressional leadership. They say Whitmer represents the direction Democrats should follow in the Trump era. Whitmer’s press office says she’ll focus on schools and jobs, as well as her marquee campaign promise to “fix the damn roads.”
Whitmer’s will be the English-language response. Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (ES’-kuh-bar) of Texas will deliver a Spanish-language response.
Whitmer’s national turn will come less than a week after she delivers her State of the State speech in Lansing.
