The student organization Voices of GVSU will host its first conference for young women.  It’s Saturday at the Grand Valley Devos Center Loosemoore Auditorium.

“This event hopes to connect our women on campus, with each other as well as with faculty and staff and women in the community who have said they’d like to mentor or connect with our students as well.”

“Women Empowering Women” is the first conference hosted by the Voices of GVSU.  Voices is known for its concerts but is expanding now to an event that seeks to connect women of all ages,  through mind, body, heart, soul and spirit.  Cassonya Carter is the senior academic advisor for the Kirkof College of Nursing and the director and founder of Voices.  Carter says this conference will serve as an opportunity for young and old alike to break any barriers that might exist.

“What we hope that everybody will walk away with is that we can learn from each other. Our seasoned folks can learn from our young folks and our young can learn from us.  And that way, we can help each other.  A lot of times we do things separate, a kind of us and them.  But we want to sponsor this conference so that it becomes a “we”.”

Carter says there will be learning sessions and keynote presentations from Grand Valley alums like Shannon Cohen among others.  Participants are also asked to bring personal care items to help stock the shelves at Replenish—which is the student food pantry.

The conference is free and will be held on Saturday, November 17th
