The Dominican Sisters Grand Rapids is reinventing its Marywood Campus. From a pool of more than a dozen potential business partners, the Dominican Sisters selected Mercy Health Saint Mary’s.
The Dominican Sisters Grand Rapids have called its 35 acre Marywood Campus home for 95 years. This is also where a congregation of 120 nuns live. Think dorm life. As a transformative plan moves forward, one goals is improving their accommodations.
“We do not want to get 10 years down the road and say, ‘Oh, my. We have lots of empty space. What shall we do?’ But rather what shall we do now so that needs are met, both needs of the sisters and needs of the wider Grand Rapids community.”
Sister Maureen Geary is Prioress of the Dominican Sisters Grand Rapids.
“We plan to walk forward with Mercy Health Saint Mary’s and Trinity Health. There are still more evaluations to be done. They want to do a very careful, detailed market studies and review of our facilities and the systems in the buildings, and so forth. And then together we’re going to figure out in what new ways can this great campus serve others and how can it meet the needs of the sisters.”
Renovations will focus on senior living and health care opportunities. There will be a focus on preserving campus green space with no current plans for new construction
