The Grand Rapids Public Schools District reached out to its students to spread the word about the new first day of school date.  Starting this year, students are slated to go back before the Labor Day holiday.  So the District is having a contest… asking students to come up with a jingle to help spread the word.

There’s one day left to vote before the winner is picked.

“Don’t be late on August 28th, don’t be late on August 28th, that’s when school starts.”

“We really wanted to have some fun with this, we’re changing the school start date. It’s actually going to be a week earlier, so we thought we’d have a contest and kids wrote jingles around them, don’t be late on August 28th.”

That’s Grand Rapids Public Schools Director of Communications and External Affairs, John Helmholdt.  He says they’re having a bit of fun with the jingle contest… but it’s a very important message and reminder.

“That first week of school that’s coming out of the gate and it’s important to be in school, ready to learn for the rest of the year and it starts day one on August 28th.”

The top six entries were posted to YouTube and shared on Facebook by the District… and

Helmholdt says the winner gets some fun prizes…

“It’s something the district is going to be using in paid advertising until start of school and the student wins passes to mi adventure. So there’s publicity involved, prizes in volved, there’s some fun publicity involved.”

“First day of school come back to school.  First day of school come back to school.  Don’t be late on August 28th.”

Helmholdt says the winner’s jingle will be played on the radio all the way up until the start of school.

Voting closes tomorrow at noon.
