The Legislature is going to work on toughening standards for lead in drinking water.
State Senator Jim Ananich says Michigan has a unique role to play in the aftermath of the Flint water crisis. He wants stricter rules to gradually reduce allowable lead levels with a goal of zero exposure to lead.
“We saw what happened. It’s a terrible, terrible tragedy what happened here in Flint, in my hometown, so we obviously should be leading, I think, in making sure it never happens again.” Ananich says that’s why Michigan shouldn’t wait on the federal government to update lead standards.
Governor Rick Snyder has said the current federal rule is confusing and partially to blame for the Flint water crisis. The Snyder administration is also working on new lead standards.
