Big changes may be coming to the Calder Plaza in downtown Grand Rapids.

Shaded areas, food trucks and space for markets and music: Those are among most-requested items on local Calder Plaza wish lists, according to city officials.

They’ve been seeking input and feedback from a variety of stakeholders and the results are in.

Of the more than 1,800 online responses, most-cited concerns included exposure to the elements – such as sun, rain, and snow – and improving various access points, from ADA compliance to connected pavilion areas.

Participants are also interested in seeing the space used for entertainment purposes.

A series of plaza design proposals feature a variety of architectural elements complementing public feedback.

The designs emphasize increased walkability, outdoor gardens and event space.

City officials will hear updates on proposed plans during a special public meeting on Tuesday, September 13, at 11 a.m. at commission chambers.
