Man charged in 2 Michigan slayings gets competency review

A man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend and her father in southwestern Michigan is getting an examination to determine whether he's competent to stand trial.

The case against 24-year-old Alex Perez is on hold until the results are known.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports a Berrien County judge ordered the review following a request from defense lawyer Richard Sammis.

Perez is jailed on $5 million bond.

Berrien County Prosecutor Michael Sepic says Perez will be examined at the state's Center for Forensic Psychiatry.

Perez is charged with murder in the deaths of 27-year-old Renee Mitchell and her father, 67-year-old John Mitchell, near Coloma in January.

Police found him and his two young daughters in Georgetown, Colorado.

Police believe Perez was returning home to Los Angeles at the time.
