Local authorities are warning of a new scam targeting businesses.

The Wyoming Police Department says the phone scam involves a caller presuming to be from Consumers Energy, stating a bill is three months past due.

The caller then threatens to shut off electricity unless payment is immediately received.

Authorities say two businesses fell victim to the scam over the weekend, wiring a total of $2,300.

Consumers officials say bills or delinquent accounts are never collected in this way.

Muskegon-area authorities warned of a similar phone scam impacting residential customers earlier this month.
