University of Michigan building new multicultural center

The University of Michigan is building a new $10 million multicultural center near the heart of its Ann Arbor campus.

On Thursday, the school's Board of Regents approved plans for the 20,000-square-foot facility, which will serve students of many cultural identities.

The facility will be built on a vacant site behind two smaller residence halls and will replace the current William Monroe Trotter Multicultural Center. The new center will accommodate spaces from the current center and add a multipurpose room able to accommodate 300 people for banquets and conferences and an active-learning, classroom-style configuration for 100 students.

The proposal was the result of input from students and members of the university community over the past nine months.
