The governor today signed a new law requiring the state health department to keep a stockpile of emergency medical supplies.

The law ensures the state would keep two months of personal protective equipment on hand in case of another event like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Republican state Representative Jeff Yaroch is the law’s sponsor. He says the federal stockpile of supplies can fall short of meeting needs.

“There’s a time delay between the time between that local emergency responders and health care systems run out of PPE—personal protective equipment and the federal stockpile—or I should say—national manufacturers of PPE kick up production.”

Michigan’s stockpile would be mobilized in the case of a declared state of disaster or emergency.
