The Grand Rapids Symphony's President, Peter Perez, has officially retired as of December 31st. Soon to take his place is Mary Tuuk. We talk with Tuuk about her vision for the symphony and how she was selected as its next President.

The Grand Rapids Symphony has named its new President and CEO. WGVU talks with Mary Tuuk.

This summer, when Grand Rapids Symphony President Peter Perez announced he was stepping down, a search committee was formed and chaired by symphony member Mary Tuuk. But the committee decided to move in a different direction. It recruited Tuuk as a candidate for the position.

“Since I was chairing the committee I obviously had to remove myself from that role and discussions continued and have resulted in where we are today.”

The Grand Rapids Symphony has passed the baton naming its 14th music director in its 86-year history.

WGVU was at DeVos Performance Hall for the announcement.

“I’m honored to be the next Music Director of the Grand Rapids Symphony.”

Marcelo Lehninger comes to Grand Rapids by way of the New West Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles.

“When I came here both times that I conducted the orchestra I felt wonderful chemistry with the musicians.
