Over a thousand local volunteers came out Friday to take part in Heart of West Michigan United Way’s annual Day of Caring. With the goal of assisting local non-profits, the Day of Caring is the largest corporate volunteer event in West Michigan. 

“It never gets old to see people who are willing to give back,” Michelle Van Dyke, the president and CEO of Heart of West Michigan United Way said. “It’s just palpable. So it’s fun to see, but it’s not surprising, because this is West Michigan.” '

In an effort to fight hunger in Kent County, Heart of West Michigan United Way held its 2nd annual Food From the Heart event Monday at the Van Andel Arena. In partnership with non-profit Feeding America West Michigan, the two organizations hosted a number of volunteers to help assemble pre-packaged meals for local families.

Ellen Carpenter and Wende Randall from the Heart of West Michigan United Way join us to talk about providing funds to over 50 different agencies and issues beyond basic needs.

 To help handle the flood of Flint residents dialing 211, Heart of West Michigan United Way, out of Grand Rapids, is setting aside staf to take those calls. Sherri Vainavicc is 211 Program Manager at United Way.

“What we did is we had a couple of our staff trained in what is occurring in Flint, become familiar with the situation and the resources that are available.”   

But just because the calls are answered in West Michigan, doesn’t mean Flint residents should expect a difference in service, Vainavicc says.
