Grand Rapids Public Schools announced today that the district will remain on line for the rest of the fall semester. 

The Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent, Board President and President of the Grand Rapids Education Association issued a joint statement today, regarding the decision to remain 100-percent virtual until the start of the second semester.

With over a billion-dollar shortfall in the Michigan School Aid Fund as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Grand Rapids Public Schools officials say the district is facing school closures and massive layoffs without federal assistance. But with a June 30th deadline approaching, time is running out. According to Grand Rapids Public Schools officials, it would mean reducing the budget by $650 per student, the most in recent memory.

Students in the Grand Rapids Public Schools District are heading back to school.  But not for classes.  The district is asking students to return to clean out lockers that remain full since COIVD-19 disrupted classes back in March. 

The students return to school will look a lot different than when they left.

“Friends, we are here live again at Sibley Elementary School with our amazing volunteers and staff from GRPS. Good morning you guys, how are you guys doing?”

That’s Javier Cervantes from Grand Rapids Public Schools at one of the six food distribution sites organized by the district to help feed local students and their families. He’s wearing gloves as he greets and hands several brown paper bags full of food to the families driving up. 

“So, you just drive on up, you get some lunch and grab it and go.”
