Comstock Park third graders had the chance to hear how 40 percussion instruments can come together in harmony. The musical zoo was courtesy of the Grand Rapids Symphony.

About 140 third graders from Comstock Park’s Pine Island Elementary School visited Celebration Cinema North recently to watch a live performance by Bill Vits, principal percussionist with the Grand Rapids Symphony.

Peter M. Perez served as Grand Rapids Symphony President and CEO the past two years. At the age of 78 he says it’s time to retire. He tells me he’ll always cherish the symphony’s triumphant return in April to New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

“We also took the chorus with us and the world-renowned pianist Nelson Freire a great friend of our Music Director, Marcelo Lehninger, was the featured artist and pianist at that event.”

Perez was also chair of the symphony from 2013 to 2015 and during that time it performed the “Live Arts” show at Van Andel Arena.

If you didn’t already know, the new director of the Grand Rapids Symphony, Marcelo Lehninger, is Latino - specifically, Brazilian. 

The West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted an event to introduce Lehninger to Latino business leaders Monday night.

Chamber director Jorge Gonzalez says he hopes Lehninger’s heritage will open new opportunities for more Latinos to attend the symphony.
