Firefighters with certain types of cancer might soon be able to charge the state for their medical expenses after the Michigan Senate approved a one-time appropriation.

The Senate unanimously approved $1 million to cover firefighters' expenses on Thursday. But Senate Majority Leader and Republican Arlan Meekhof says he doesn't know whether that is enough to cover the cost of firefighters' current cancer bills. 

Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation in January 2015 meant to cover cancer spurred by carcinogens they absorbed on the job.

$6.5M to help Michigan researcher study cancer stem cells

  A $6.5 million grant will help a University of Michigan researcher study cancer stem cells, the small number of cells within a tumor that fuel its growth and spread.

The Ann Arbor school on Thursday announced the Outstanding Investigator Award funding from the National Cancer Institute for Dr. Max Wicha.

The school says the award is roughly three times a traditional individual investigator award and is part of a new grant program developed by the National Cancer Institute.

Ford conducting tests after chemical found outside plant

Ford Motor Company is conducting tests at one of its Detroit-area facilities after finding vinyl chloride in groundwater outside the plant.

The Detroit News reports Wednesday that samples with the chemical were found last summer at least seven feet below ground on the east side of Ford's Livonia Transmission Plant.

The Dearborn-based automaker tells the newspaper that it poses no health risk to people living in the area and that the plant gets its drinking water from the city of Detroit's system.
