Last month, the Trump administration ordered asylum seekers deported without reviewing their claims as a step to avoid further spread of coronavirus. At the time, officials said that unaccompanied children would be exempt from this order. However, last week, the Department of Homeland Security began applying the policy to children seeking asylum in the United States.

This change in practice has officials at Bethany Christian Services concerned. In a statement, they believe the practice is a violation of the children’s legal rights.

A major faith-based foster care and adoption contractor for the state of Michigan is reversing its policy and will place children with same-same couples to comply with a legal settlement.

Bethany Christian Services and the state confirmed the change Monday.

Bethany Christian Services says while it is "disappointed" with how the settlement has been implemented, it will nonetheless reverse its policy so it continues foster care and adoption work for the state.

The Michigan attorney general's office has settled a lawsuit by same-sex couples who say their rights have been violated by faith-based adoption agencies that don't want to work with gays and lesbians.

Under the settlement announced Friday, the state says it will enforce non-discrimination provisions in its foster care and adoption agency contracts.

Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel initiated settlement talks upon taking office. She says discrimination in foster care and adoption services is "illegal, no matter the rationale."

The Holland Sentinel reports Saturday's attempt at Kollen Park in Holland drew just under 1,000 dancers. They needed about 2,600.

Last year, they came closer, netting 1,700 in their first attempt.

The city of Holland is known for its Dutch heritage. Organizers say breaking the record would have been great but the event is more about fundraising: It was held in partnership with Bethany Christian Services, an adoption support agency.
