A Barry County man claims a fragment of the meteor that penetrated the earth’s atmosphere over Michigan this week – the one with the sonic boom causing an earthquake registering 2.0 on the Richter scale – came down over his head just outside Hastings. WGVU made the drive and trekked the fields in search of its remains.

“Uh, uh…who’d of…50 yards from where it hits and seeing it!”

Stacy Garrison was pulling into his driveway around 8:10 Tuesday evening.

Michigan State Police say a husband and wife are dead following an apparent murder-suicide at a home in Barry County.

TV stations WOOD and WWMT report police responded Sunday afternoon to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute in Carlton Township.

The call was disconnected and Detective First Lt. Chuck Christensen says police arrived to find the husband, who was in his 50s, at the home with a gun.

Christensen says the man then fatally shot himself and is believed to have fatally shot his wife, who was in her 40s.

Names weren't immediately released.

High school students in southwestern Michigan have taken top honors statewide for the school's campaign to stop distracted driving and boost seat belt use.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says Thursday that students at Sturgis High School were recognized for their efforts to educate classmates.

The "Strive For a Safer Drive" campaign is presented by the safety office and Ford Driving Skills for Life.

Three Rivers High School in St. Joseph County finished second.

HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan appeals court has overturned a decision that granted benefits to the wife of a sheriff's deputy who died in a motorcycle crash after spending hours with a mistress. There's no dispute that Christopher Yonkers was not working as a Barry County deputy shortly before the 2008 crash. The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards denied benefits to Yonkers' widow.
