The winners of this year's international ArtPrize competition are being announced during an event in western Michigan.

In all, $500,000 in cash prizes will be awarded as part of ArtPrize Nine - including $200,000 for the public favorite and $200,000 for a winner picked by an expert jury.

An awards event takes place Friday night in Grand Rapids before ArtPrize wraps up on Sunday.

The first round of voting narrowed entries down to 20 chosen by the public and 20 by the jury. The second round of voting ran through this week.

A Congressional Gold Medal has been presented to a Detroit-area veteran who was among the first African-Americans to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps.

U.S. Sen. Gary Peters' office said in a news release that John Willie Jordan of Farmington Hills was presented Monday with a medal earlier awarded to the Montford Point Marines.

The Congressional Gold Medal is Congress' highest civilian honor.

According to Peters' office, the Montford Point Marines is the name given to the first African-Americans in the Marines Corps.

The Women's Resource Center honors local businesses for empowering women in the workplace with the Pillar Awards. Today, Executive Director Sharon Caldwell-Newton and a recipient talk about the event.
