Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a law today (Thu.) that aims to reduce auto insurance rates. As we hear from Michigan Public Radio’s Rick Pluta, it caps Michigan’s previously unlimited personal injury protections that pay for medical care.
Democrats and Republicans have been divided for decades on the best way to bring down Michigan’s high auto insurance costs. Whitmer signed the bill…

… to the delight of business people and legislators on hand for the event. Whitmer said the new law is victory for bipartisan problem-solving.
“A month ago, no one thought we’d be here talking about a no-fault solution. A lot can happen in a short period of time.”
The governor says the tough bargaining on this issue might set a pattern for the future, including efforts to reach an agreement on raising taxes for road repairs.
