Whitmer, Republicans to move ahead on budget

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a truce with GOP leaders in the battle over road funding.
That leaves time to wrap up the next state budget with the deadline less than three weeks away.

Governor Whitmer dropped a surprise this week when she announced budget negotiations will go ahead without new money for roads and infrastructure. Whitmer, a Democrat, and Republican leaders in the Legislature say that will wait until negotiations wrap up in time to meet the October first deadline.
Senator Jim Stamas is the Republican budget chair. He says there’s still a lot of work to do to come to an agreement.

“There’s a lot of differences within the budget. So we’re looking at all of them and finding common ground where we can.”

Governor Whitmer says she agreed to move ahead without new road money to avoid the catastrophe of a state government shutdown.
