Governor Gretchen Whitmer will deliver the Democratic rebuttal tonight (Tue.) to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
She will deliver her speech from the East Lansing High School.
The governor will speak in front of an auditorium filled with students, parents, and teachers. The governor’s daughters both attend school in East Lansing.
Whitmer says she won’t spend much time on impeachment during her 10-minute response – but will focus instead on people’s practical concerns, despite record low jobless numbers.
“Not one person gets credit or blame for all of it. What we should be judged on, though, is what we are doing to improve the quality of life for people.”
The President won Michigan by the smallest of margins in 2016. It’s no secret one reason Whitmer was selected to give the response is to help Democrats win voters in Michigan and other Midwest industrial states.
